Measuring desiccation-induced tensile stress during cracking process

چکیده

The desiccation cracking of soil occurs when shrinkage is restricted during the drying process and induced tensile stress equals strength. Thus far, experimental estimations have not been realized, although such estimates are important for predicting crack initiation. This study presents development a laboratory-based test to measure generated until In this proposed test, in longitudinal direction bar-shaped specimens with fixed ends. Desiccation tests were performed on sandy rich fine fraction, results verified through photographic observations initiation comparisons direct tension tests. show that yields reliable cracking. application illustrated via verification an existing model by desiccation. useful determining parameters significantly influence enable its accurate prediction

Junction formation during desiccation cracking.

In order to provide a sound physical basis for the understanding of the formation of desiccation crack networks, an experimental study is presented addressing junction formation. Focusing on junctions, basic features of the network determining the final pattern, provides an elemental approach and imparts conceptual clarity to the rather complicated problem of the evolution of crack patterns. Us...

Acoustic Emission during Stress Corrosion Cracking Test

AE monitoring from various types of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been conducted for the past 15 years in our laboratory. This paper discusses AE results of active-path dissolution-type SCC of austenitic stainless steel in chloride solution and fused salt, fluoride and polythionic acid solutions, brass in ammonia (Mattosson's solution), and carbon steels in nitrite solution. Transgranular...

Corrosion Product Film-Induced Stress Facilitates Stress Corrosion Cracking

Finite element analyses were conducted to clarify the role of corrosion product films (CPFs) in stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Flat and U-shaped edge-notched specimens were investigated in terms of the CPF-induced stress in the metallic substrate and the stress in the CPF. For a U-shaped edge-notched specimen, the stress field in front of the notch tip is affected by the Young's modulus of th...

Numerical Modeling of Desiccation Cracking in Compacted Soils

Desiccation cracking and its implications will be more of an issue due to the global warming trends. Soils tend to shrink when they lose moisture. In particular, fine-grained soils are susceptible to shrinkage and the resulting volume change. Shrinkage can cause cracking of soils that can adversely impact the engineering properties and behavior of the soils. As a result, the integrity of struct...

Desiccation of a clay film: cracking versus peeling.

We report a simulation study on competition between cracking and peeling, in a layer of clay on desiccation and how this is affected by the rate of drying, as well as the roughness of the substrate. The system is based on a simple 2-dimensional spring model. A vertical section through the layer with finite thickness is represented by a rectangular array of nodes connected by linear springs on a...
